The Brelactis Difference
The six strains of bacteria in BRELACTIS are normal
inhabitants of the small intestine of young calves. These six
bacterial strains were originally isolated from the calf’s
digestive tract and were selected because of their superior
performance.
Other microbial products use bacteria derived from yogurt
and cheese manufacturing. These off-the-shelf microbial
collections are not specific to the unique conditions in the young
calf’s digestive tract. BRELACTIS, on the other hand, targets
this dynamic, changing environment.
BRELACTIS Calf Research
Five trials using a total of 210 calves were conducted at
Merrick’s Calf Research Facility during the summer/fall of
2002 and 2003. BRELACTIS was added daily to milk replacer
medicated with oxytetracycline and neomycin base. Calves
fed BRELACTIS were less expensive to raise due to reduced
labor costs.
BRELACTIS Certification
The six proprietary strains of direct-fed microbials in BRELACTIS are regularly subjected to
a stringent evaluation process. Each strain is grown and maintained separately. Every time we
blend the strains together to produce BRELACTIS, we confirm the genetic identity of each
strain through DNA analysis. This process is called DNA-PCR. It ensures that every bag and every
pail of BRELACTIS is identical for consistent and reliable results.
BRELACTIS - DAILY DOSE
The number of viable (living) bacteria in a product is
expressed as colony-forming units (CFU). The number
of CFU consumed is a major factor in the effectiveness
of the dose. The CFU the calf actually consumes is a
combination of the CFU concentration in the product and
the amount of product fed each day.
Daily intake of lactic acid bacteria varies among products
from 50 million to 10 billion CFU. With 10 billion CFU/
day, Merrick’s BRELACTIS provides from 5 to 200 times
more CFU/day of lactic acid bacteria than other microbial
products.
