    MIXING & FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS

    FORTIFIER

When fortifying whole milk, add Merrick's Whole Milk Fortifier & Extender at a rate of 1½ oz of dry powder (1½ scoops*) per 2 quarts of whole milk. Feed approximately 2 quarts of milk TWICE DAILY. *Scoop in each 25 lb pail holds approximately 1 oz dry weight.

    EXTENDER MIXING CHART

When extending your supply of whole milk, each calf should receive at least ½ gallon of this mixture TWICE DAILY, beginning immediately after colostrum feeding.

Amount of Dry Powder by Weight* Gallons of Milk Gallons of Water Total Gallons Calves per Feeding
    12 oz 2 3 5 10
    2 lbs. 6 9 15 30
    5 lbs. 15 20 35 70
    7 lbs. 20 30 50 100
    25 lbs. 75 100 175 350
    50 lbs. 150 200 350 700

*Dry powder should be weighed to determine recommended amount.

    FOR BEST RESULTS
  • Provide starter (grain mix) for calves when they are about 4 days of age and feed free choice up to appetite.
  • Calves can be weaned when they consume between 2 to 3 pounds of starter feed for 2 to 3 days.

  • Weaning time may need to be adjusted for smaller calves.

  • GOOD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
  • Good newborn care is crucial to maximize calf survival rates. Immediate feeding of colostrum is one of the most important steps to increase the survival and health of newborn calves. Feed 2 quarts of high quality, first milking colostrum within the first 30 minutes after birth. Feed an additional 2 quarts at 6 to 12 hours of age. Continue feeding colostrum through the third day after birth.
  •  Have fresh, clean water available at all times.

  • Do not feed hay until after weaning, when calves are consuming adequate amounts of dry starter.

  • Calves should be housed in clean, dry individual pens that are well ventilated and draft free.

  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature.
