Each time an animal consumes a meal, as much as 10-20% of the food energy can be used to mount an inflammatory response in the gut to help protect against possible food borne pathogens, even if none are present. By blocking the phospholipase A2 enzyme (PLA2) this antibody (aPLA2) inhibits gut inflammation, thereby freeing more feed energy to be used for better weight gain and feed conversion efficiency. <br> <br> Two trials conducted at Merrick&#39;s Calf Research Facility evaluated the performance of calves fed milk replacer supplemented with Big Calf. In Trial 1, calves received a 20/20 all milk protein milk replacer and in Trial 2, a 25/15 milk and egg intensive feeding formula. When compared to control calves, Big Calf calves were 6.4 lbs heavier at the end of Trial 1 and 7.1 lbs heavier at the end of Trial 2. Big Calf calves ate 13.5% more starter and required 33% fewer medical treatments during both trials -- an average treatment savings of $3.40 per calf. Trial 2 calves were comingled at the end of the 8 week trial and fed through a self-feeder on pasture. Calves were weighed at approximately 450 lbs (19 weeks).
