Merrick's Super Calf-Kit fortifier has been a long-time favorite for adding additional energy to milk and milk replacer during periods of cold stress. Winter Star is a complete milk replacer specifically designed for cold weather feeding, eliminating the need for daily energy supplements. Research was conducted to evaluate the effects of Winter Star and Super Calf-Kit on calf weight gain during cold exposure.
Trial 1
In a study conducted at Merrick's Research Farm during January and February, 60 calves were assigned to the following three treatments (20 per treatment):

Results: Calves and treatments 2 and 3 received more dietary fat, averaged 4 lb heavier and had greater average daily gains than calves receiving only 20% fat in milk replacer. Calves on treatment 2 received Super Calf-Kit during 77% of feedings. Starter intake and fecal scores were similar for all three treatments. These results indicate that feeding higher levels of fat during cold weather helps calves maintain or improve growth rate.
